Near East Quartet & Kyungso Park
Concept
The fifth show in the K-Music 2018 festival, performed in the Purcell Room at the Southbank Centre, produced by the Korean Cultural Centre and Serious.
The night began with Kyungso Park - a composer, player and improviser of the gayageum, a traditional Korean stringed instrument that sounds like a cross between a harp, an oud and a theremin. She freely breaks down the borders between traditional and contemporary music through jazz, dance and classical.
Near East Quartet followed up with thier set juxtaposing elements of contemporary jazz and traditional Korean music with pure sound exploration to create new forms. Saxophonist/clarinettist Sungjae Son and guitarist Suwuk Chung have been members from the outset, and the group has been strengthened with the integration of a pansori singer and highly creative drummer Soojin Suh.
The artists finished with a collaboration to the rapture of the audience.
Execution
Before the show, the artists gathered on stage and were asked some questions relating to this collaboration. They answered in Korean which was translated for the edit. Two positions at the back of the auditorium were set for the cameras and audio was taken from the sound desk. Throughout the show, a series of photographs were captured followed by filming audience reactions in the foyer of the Southbank Centre.
Previously a trailer for the event had been created using preexisting footage.
